Yellow Flowers
Yellow-flowered plant have got to be the most common ones. There are dozens of native plants with yellow flowers.
I have to admit it. I don’t have the slightest idea what this plant is. Please let me know if you can identify it. They’re all over our yard. The plants are about a foot tall and the flowers are about an inch in diameter.
According to Mr. Smarty Plants, at the Wildflower Center, the most common colors are, in order: 1. white, 2. yellow, 3. blue, 4. red. He emphasizes that this is just a guess.
From my experience, this is about right. I know blues are pretty rare and reds are too.
One of my biologists friends, who works at the Wildflower Center, did a plant survey at our property and I noticed she had marked many as DYC. I asked her what that meant. She said, somewhat sheepishly, that it was a biologist’s technical term meaning Damned Yellow Composite. I had to laugh. Just the fact that biologists have a term for it shows how many hard-to-identify yellow-flowered plants there must be.
I feel better about not being to identify it!
Here’s a close-up of some of them. They have many yellow petals and a globular center part.
By the way, Mr. Smarty Plants is a great resource. It’s a free service provided by the
Wildflower Center staff. You can submit questions and get a prompt answer. You can also review their FAQ and see if your question has already been answered.
