Winter Wonder Grasses
Our native grasses, in addition to being well-adapted to our environment, are simply beautiful. Even in the dead of winter, they have plenty of beauty on display.
It’s warm, about 70 degrees, and sunny today, but it’s the middle of winter nonetheless. The native grasses are dormant and their flowers and seed heads are long spent, in preparation for the coming spring. What they’ve left behind though is amazing.
You’re probably saying to yourself: “How can he get so excited about some grasses?” Well, check it out!
First up, is a photo of Silver Bluestem (Bothriochloa saccharoides). Silver bluestem is fairly common on our property. This clump is just inside our gate.
The afternoon sun provides the perfect backlight and the silver bluestem does the rest. Do you see what I mean?
Next is a shot of Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium). We have quite a bit of it on our property and our backyard is full of it. It’s quite striking and turns a lovely red in the fall.
This clump is just a little further inside our gate, right at the side of our driveway.
I hope you find these small native grass samples as lovely as I do! Please leave a comment, either way!
