A Visit To Onion Creek
Onion Creek is a constant in my daily travels. It winds its way through Hays County and I always seem to end up crossing it at least once a day. I always take a look at it to see how much water it carries. In recent years it’s been mostly dry, but I remember better, wetter times.
We had recent rains, so I could see water in sections that had been dry. I headed over to a crossing where I could get a better look.
This is the view from a small bridge over the creek. This spot is quite near to I-35 which is the major interstate running through Hays County. You can’t tell there are thousands of cars, going by at 70 mph, every day, quite close to here. That makes me feel good.
Perhaps the stream and wildlife can lead the existence they evolved for, before we came along to disrupt things.
Here’s a view from the bank. I’m standing on the rocky section you can see in the first photo. The sky had been overcast all morning, but started clearing just as I arrived. Much appreciated.
The creek looks peaceful now, but just over a year ago, it was a monster. Due to heavy rainfall, it swelled and overflowed its banks. I couldn’t tell how high the water had been at this point, but I’m sure the bridge would have been many feet under a raging current.
