Plum Confused
I think the Mexican Plums (Prunus mexicana) are confused. They’re not the only ones, either! Many plants thought we were being treated to an early Spring.
Our normal, but erratic, Central Texas weather has a habit of tricking the plants into thinking Spring is here, only to turn extremely cold and freezing. I always worry that the plants will suffer great damage, but then I realize that the native ones can probably handle it. I’m sure they’ve seen it all.
I’ve seen many trees falling for it lately, in mid-February, and there were a few Mexican Plums that stood out last week because they were covered with lovely white blossoms. This photo is of one right outside my work office. The tree is about 15 feet tall and has a striking appearance due to being bare except for its flowers.
These trees are native but I’m not sure if these were already part of the landscape or were brought in when the offices were built. Either way, they look right at home and are a great addition to any landscape.
Here’s a closer view of a few of the blossoms. They tend to cluster and form quite beautiful arrangements. They stand out against the bare and dark bark.
Here’s another cluster with a lot more flowers in it.
The plums will be ripe this fall and I’ll try to get some before the birds do.
