A Feral Hog
I saw the feral hog when I was still pretty far away. He was rooting in the ground and wasn’t looking up.
I’ve seen signs of their rooting and digging up the ground before, but had never seen one actually doing it. That’s the main reason they are undesirable. They can destroy quite a bit of native habitat.
Since he didn’t notice me, I tried to get closer for a good photograph. I was able to get quite close before he saw me. When he did look up, he froze and I took this photograph.
I had frozen too and I could tell he wasn’t sure what to do.
I started to wonder if he would charge me. I looked around to see if there was any protection around me, but there wasn’t. I took a step and he bolted in a direction away from me.
I guess he was about 3 feet tall and weighed around a 100 pounds. I base my guess by comparison to Beau, our Great Pyrnees, but I could be off.
Much less threatening and exciting were all the bluebonnets I saw. Here’s a photo of a small patch of bluebonnets near our northern rock wall.
