Cactus Flowers
The cactus on our property have started putting on their show. We’ve had rain recently and that’s what triggers their blooms. They’re very opportunistic – they have to be. Who knows when it will rain again? Immediately after a rain, the cactus flowers appear.
The most common cactus we have is the Prickly Pear Cactus (Opuntia engelmannii). Their flowers are mostly yellow, but some have red and orange. This plant only has a few blooms right now, but you can see others are on their way. The plant is about 3 feet tall and 4 feet in diameter.
Here’s a closeup photo of the center of the flower. You can see the stigma, in the center, sorrounded by pistils very clearly and they’re covered with small grains of pollen.
We also have quite a few Lace Cactus (Echinocereus reichenbachii). They’re smaller and harder to spot, except when they are blooming and then you can’t miss them. They’re about 3 or 4 inches tall and shaped like small barrels. It’s funny that their flowers are so large compared to the plant. They try so hard.
Here’s a closeup photo of the flower. As with the prickly pear flower, you can see the stamen and pistils. This photo was taken in the morning and the flower was only partially open. In the afternoon, the pink petals are fully extended and give the flower a more flat appearance.
